Home > Dhaka Mirpur
The area became the hotspot during the movement and its residents witnessed firsthand the historical events that took place. We observed numerous notable Deyal Likhon in Mirpur.
Mirpur, situated on the northwestern periphery of the capital city of Dhaka, has historically served as a primary gateway for rural-urban migrants in Bangladesh. Individuals from rural villages migrate to the area in search of enhanced opportunities for a better quality of life. Some have experienced upward mobility and become part of the emerging middle class, while others continue to face significant challenges in their daily lives. The area has undergone significant expansion through the establishment of ‘model towns’ and the emergence of the largest slum in Dhaka.
In the absence of formal employment opportunities, individuals, particularly from the younger generation, seek and create job opportunities through various means, which in turn stimulates new forms of informal business. Concurrently, the growth of the new middle class and their commitment to educational advancement for their children has led to a rapid proliferation of educational institutions in this area. A plethora of public and private educational institutions, spanning the pre-primary to higher education levels and varying in quality, have emerged, creating employment opportunities for the educated youth within the region. Consequently, Mirpur has become a hub in Dhaka of youth from diverse backgrounds.
The student movement in Bangladesh during July 2024 made headlines around the world when it forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign from power on August 5. Immediately after their movement’s “victory,” the youth painted public murals called Deyal Likhon in the capital city of Dhaka. This photo exhibition of Deyal Likhon is a record of the temporal power of young citizens to reform their nation.
