Timeline of the July 2024 Movement

The table below outlines the timeline of events leading up to and including the July Movement.The Deyal Likhon murals are a historical documentation of the movement from the perspective of those who led and participated in it, Generation Z. The events highlighted in red are specifically referenced in the murals.

   2013  Students demand reform of the quota system of the   Bangladesh Civil Service during the Shahbag Movement
   2018  Students protest against the quota system
   2020  The government issues a notification to abolish the quota system
  2024  June 5 A verdict from the High Court Division of the Supreme Court  cancels the government notification and restores the quota
  July 5-9 Students stage a blockade and demand that the quota be rescinded
 July    10-17 Armed members of the Chatra League attack the protesting students
  July 14 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina refers to the protesting students as the children of Razakars (traitors in the 1971 War of Independence)
  July 15 The police attack protesters
  July 16 Abu Sayed, a Begum Rokeya University student and quota reform activist, is shot dead by a police officer
  July 18-19 Internet access is shutdown
  July  19-22 A curfew is imposed after more than 105 people, mainly  protesters, are killed
  July 21 The Supreme Court reforms the quota system
  July 24 Internet access is restored
  July 29 Large-scale demonstrations resume with a nine-point demand, including that Sheikh Hasina apologizes and takes responsibility for the student deaths

  Aug. 3 A “non-cooperation movement” is launched with the sole demand that Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet resign
